Moodle 3.3 will come with built in support for FontAwesome icons #Moodle3.3

Fontawesome  is a font and icon toolkit based on CSS and LESS. This is an icon font containing more than 470 icons to choose from. The fontawesome usage provides a number of benefits like –  fewer http requests, sharper scaling, color can be adjusted with CSS, efficient caching etc.

Moodle 3.3 – the upcoming Moodle release scheduled in May 2017, will have built-in support for Fontawesome icons. Moodle HQ team has taken up the Moodle Tracker issue MDL- 40759 lately and started working upon that. However, Font awesome must be supported by the theme in order for it to have an effect.

Right now, the font awesome project is in Peer Review stage and waiting for the community to have a look over that. You can also have a look over the prototype demo of the project here – http://prototype.moodle.net/fontawesome/course/view.php?id=3

Moodle 3.3 will come with built in support for FontAwesome icons #Moodle3.3

The motivation behind this project is:

All the most popular community Moodle themes replace the standard icons in Moodle with font-awesome. Because they are limited to a plugin, it’s not possible to do a complete replacement and the result is some icons are converted, but some are not. By adding the concept of icon systems to Moodle core, we can map from Moodle icon names to a specific icon font name (and allow plugins to map their own icons), allow future icon systems (e.g. inline svg icons) and fix all the bad uses of pix_url vs pix_icon in core.

However, still it is a work in progress but if you are interested, take a look and share your views in the comments section of the tracker issue. If you would like to compare the old and new icons check out the complete list here – http://prototype.moodle.net/fontawesome/test.php

Do you also support the inclusion of fontawesome icons in Moodle core? Share your views with us in the comment section below.
