How Moodle is gearing up for Europe’s General Data Protection Regulation (#GDPR)?

European Union's GDPR becomes enforceable from May 25th, 2018

On May 25th, 2018, all European people or organizations that stores or processes personal information have to comply the European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). GDPR will replace the data protection directive from 1995.

As we had covered in our last post, Moodle has made an initial plan to comply with EU General Data Protection Regulation. Based on the feedback gathered from Moodle community, Moodle partners and Moodle institutions around the world, Moodle HQ development team came up with a GDPR support plan.

What’s the Moodle HQ’s GDPR Support plan?

Recently, Moodle HQ team has disclosed the support plan to comply the EU’s General Data Protection Regulation. Initially, Moodle HQ team is planning to develop plugins to cover the:

  • on boarding of new users
  • privacy statements
  • tracking of consent
  • handling of subject access requests

The plugins will be released in the month of March 2018 to let the institutions, who are using Moodle 3.3 & Moodle 3.4, to become GDPR compliant.  With the release of Moodle 3.5 (the next LTS version) in May 2018, the plugins will be included in Moodle core.

Please note that as of now the plugins are not supposed to support sites running a Moodle version less than Moodle 3.3. So, in order if you would like your Moodle to be GDPR compliant, you need to upgrade your site to Moodle 3.3 or newer versions asap.

Moodle HQ team also appointed a specialist lawyer from Europe as a consultant. The lawyer will look into the specifications and recommend the improvements in the European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation support plan.

If you would like to share your views/feedback about the GDPR support plan, please get involved in this Moodle Forum thread.
