How to improve student engagement in Moodle course by using a real time interactive quiz #Moodletips

Improving student engagement in online courses is always a big challenge for teachers and Moodle teachers also strive to improve the engagement in their online courses. There are many other tips shared by Moodle community members over the past few years to increase the student engagement in your course like introducing Gamification, Badges, Using forum as a tool etc.

Today, I am going to share about  – How you can enhance the student engagement by using an interactive real-time quiz in your Moodle course.

Active Quiz Plugin:

To get started we need to have the Active Quiz Moodle plugin on our Moodle site. Active Quiz is a Moodle activity plugin which was initially developed as an update to the Real Time quiz plugin but later progressed into a standalone plugin.

By using Active Quiz plugin you can offer in class quizzes on any device using a responsive theme in real-time. This can boost the in class discussions and quickly result in grabbing the attentions of the students. You can also use timed questions like the students have to submit their answer within 30 seconds or more. For simple questions you can cut the timing.

This kind of quizzes are designed to be used during the face to face learning  and best suited for classrooms where all the students have their own device. Teachers have to create the quiz in advance and they can include any questions from Moodle question bank.

Ralph Nyberg – technology educator and IT professional has shared a great video tutorial about using the Active Quiz plugin in Moodle. Check out the video below:

The plugin is currently maintained by John Hoopes and is available for all supported Moodle versions. Need help in setting up an active quiz in your Moodle course – Check out this University of Wisconsin knowledge base.
