Add Markdown syntax using Marklar – markdown friendly editor for Moodle #MoodlePlugins

March 11th, 2016

Marklar editor is a new markdown friendly text editor for Moodle which makes it very easy to write the markdown syntax in Moodle.

For those who are not aware about Markdown Syntax, here is definition from Wikipedia:

Markdown is a lightweight markup language with plain text formatting syntax designed so that it can be converted to HTML and many other formats using a tool by the same name. Markdown is often used to format readme files, for writing messages in online discussion forums, and to create rich text using a plain text editor.

The Marklar text editor is a WYTIWYG kind of editor instead of WYSIWYG editor like Atto and TinyMCE which gives you “What you see is what you get” kind of content.

Here are few features of the Marklar editor:

  • Marklar does not have buttons. Markdown syntax is to be typed manually.
  • Marklar is not extensible via sub-plugins.
  • Marklar supports images embedding via filepicker.

You can download the Marklar text editor from Moodle plugins database here. The editor is suitable for Moodle 3.0 onwards only.
